History of the El Dorado Western Railroad

Constructed in the late-1800s, this now-famous railroad played a vital role in El Dorado County history. Originally, the rail lines were used to transport dairy and produce products out west to the area’s earliest settlers. As the years went on, the railroad was extended, stretching all the way from Shingle Springs to the Sacramento River and Placerville. By the 1900s, it became the main source of transportation for the booming lumber industry. Locomotives hauled logs to many of the area’s mills, which in turn made the area a thriving lumber community.

While the last train from Placerville departed in 1987, the railroad still offers fun and educational train rides on an ongoing basis. Visitors can climb into one of the original gang cars and enjoy an hour-long ride through the beautiful Northern California countryside. Whether you’re interested in Placerville, CA, history or just looking for a romantic way to spend the day with your sweetheart, a ride on the El Dorado Western Railroad is an absolute must!

About El Dorado Western Railroad Train Rides

Excursions on the railroad are offered by the El Dorado County Museum every Sunday year-round (weather permitting). On second and fourth Sundays, the train departs from the historic Shingle Springs Train Station. There are also special two-hour “long runs” offered every fifth Sunday of the month.
