What Is the El Dorado Trail?
The El Dorado Trail includes about 35 miles of paths between Placerville and the Camino area of Northern California. These trails are exclusively open to people walking, riding bicycles, or on horseback. The trail features a 2% grade, making it an easy journey for travelers. Keep in mind that there is an eight-mile paved section suitable for road bikes while the rest may be rocky and more suited for mountain biking, hiking, or horseback riding.
There is an ongoing effort to continue the expansion of the trail, so stay tuned for updates and maintenance to certain sections. We recommend following the Friends of the El Dorado Trail Facebook page to stay up to date on announcements and trail information.
Local tip: If you’re interested in geocaching, there are over 100 geocaches to discover along the trail!
How Can I Get There?
While there are no cars allowed on the trail, there are plenty of places to park nearby. It’s divided into sections with multiple trailheads available as starting points. For the paved pathway on the eastern end, we recommend a few different parking lots.
Placerville Station, on Mosquito Road, is just minutes from Eden Vale Inn and always offers free parking. You can also drive a little to the west and park on Missouri Flat Road. Just be aware of parking regulations and stay in designated areas for trail access. Camelia Lane is another good option in the Smithflat area.
