We’ll give you a taste of what to expect at the museum, but then you have to come and experience it for yourself.
Know Before You Go: Bernhard Museum
What’s the Story Behind the Bernhard Museum?
The Bernhard Museum, also known as the Bernhard Museum Complex, is a short drive from our inn along CA-49 N to Auburn, CA. The main building was built in 1851, making it one of the oldest buildings in all of Placer County! Back then, it was aptly named Traveler’s Rest, providing miners with some much-needed relaxation on their missions to strike it rich.
Meet Bernhard Bernhard
Traveler’s Rest turned into a private residence in 1858, and then a man by the name of Bernhard Bernhard purchased it ten years later. He was a German immigrant that envisioned the property as more than a place to stay — it had so much untapped potential. Bernhard eventually added a stone winery building and processing facility to the property, in addition to expanding the already thriving orchards and fruit trees.
Plan Your Visit
So, what can you see here today? The Bernhard Museum Complex includes the main residence with Victorian-era decor, the restored winery and processing buildings, and a carriage barn full of wagons. Tours are available Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. People rave about how knowledgable the costumed docents are — be sure to ask them any questions you might have along the way. Did we mention that the tours are free?
Tip: If you’re looking to soak up some scenery with your history, check out Lake Clementine in the area! It’s a beautiful spot near Auburn where you can enjoy some hiking, swimming, and boating.
